Abstract Art Launch

Children and staff from Kilross Primary School and Gaelscoil na Speirini attended the launch of their abstract art project in Draperstown Library on Friday 13th December 2013.  They were joined by the artist Stephen Boyle, family and friends and members of Magherafelt District Council.  The project, which has been carried out over a four week period, engaged children from both schools in exploring the concept of abstract art and creating their own individual art canvas in the style of the American artist Jackson Pollock (1921 – 1956).

The P4 – P7 pupils from Kilross Primary School and Gaelscoil na Speirini met together and took part in two outings to Belfast City Hall and Stormont to explore the roles of decision makers in civic society today.   The younger children joined together for a trip to the cinema to  see Frozen.

At the launch pupils and staff from both schools spoke of their experience of the project and what they had gained from taking part.  Louise Hamilton, aged 9, (Kilross Primary School) said:

“I really enjoyed meeting the children from Gael school.  We had great fun together, getting to know one another.”

Abstract Art

The children are introduced to the work of Jackson Pollock, an abstract artist (1912 - 1956). The children went on to produce their own abstract canvas which will be displayed in the school.
